RC-12 wireless mini video camera can record itself get lost

April 30th, 2008 Digg it Digg this story

We’ve seen a number of cameras mounted on RCvehicles before, but if you’re looking for a more out-of-the-box solution, you may want to consider this so-called RC-12 camera now available from Japan Trend Shop, which is not only smaller than most, but able to be used underwater as well. Apparently, the 2.7 megapixel camera will work up to 30 meters away with the included 1.2GHz Morse typeS receiver, and last for about 45 minutes on a single charge, which is likely more than you’ll ever want to shoot in one go, unless of course you happen to be recording some first-person footage from your next robot laser battle, which we could never possibly get enough of. As you might have guessed, however, the pint-sized kit doesn’t exactly come cheap, with it setting you back $269, plus some fairly hefty shipping charges.

Ricoh’s 28mm GR Digital II camera gets reviewed

April 30th, 2008 Digg it Digg this story

It’s taken a little while for Ricoh’s 10-megapixel GR Digital II to make the rounds since it was announced late last year, but it’s finally wound up in the capable hands of the folks from Photography Blog, who’ve now turned out a full review of the camera. Among other things, this one is particularly notable for its use of a 28mm fixed focal length lens, which Photography Blog found helped deliver some solid images with “very little distortion.” They were also pleased with the addition of a RAW shooting mode (even though it slows things down quite a bit), and the camera’s intuitive control system, which can be “almost completely configured to suit your way of working.” On the downside, they found the camera suffered from the common drawback of excessive noise at ISO 400 or above, and there is the small matter of the $699 price tag, which puts it on the level of some pretty impressive non-28mm cameras, and within striking range of the 28mm Sigma DP1. Still, the GR Digital II appears to hold its own, and seems like it’d be an even better buy if you can find a good deal on it.

Sealife DC800 underwater camera goes deep, stays dry

April 29th, 2008 Digg it Digg this story

Attention wet people: Sealife has released the DC800 Underwater Digital Camera. This modular unit — it drops into a waterproof case or will operate as an out-of-water point-and-shoot — includes an 8-megapixel camera with 2.7-inch display, wide-angle lens, SD/SDHC card support, and 4x optical zoom. So what makes this camera diver-friendly? Its menus and modes are designed for sub-surface snappers with five underwater modes to deal with the various water bodies’ muck, grime, and color. The DC800 will function at 200 feet, weighs about 17 ounces and will set you back $549. Sure, you could get another point-and-shoot and waterproof case, but prepare to suffer the ridicule of your diver friends.

Tessera’s OptiML Zoom gets cameraphones 3x closer without moving parts

April 28th, 2008 Digg it Digg this story

Oh sure, those with no shame whatsoever can snag a totally sketchy LV 2008 with an attachable zoom lens, but those of us with a shred of dignity are waiting on something better. Enter Tessera Technologies, which is today announcing that its OptiML Zoom solution is available for licensing. Said innovation brings a unique lens design and specialized algorithms to replace “traditional mechanical zoom capabilities,” giving equipped cameraphones 3x optical zoom capabilities in a “compact camera module without moving parts.” Hailed as the industry’s first non-mechanical optical zoom solution, it promises to not degrade images the way digital zoom does, and while it’s eager to see handset OEMs pick up the tech and integrate it into forthcoming mobiles, we’ve yet to hear of any big players jumping on board.

DXG-569V HD camcorder available for $169

April 28th, 2008 Digg it Digg this story

While DXG has few aspirations to taste or quality, they sure know how to price this stuff. The new DXG-569V HD cam can shoot 1280 x 720 video at 30 fps, captures 5 megapixel stills and sports a 3-inch foldout LCD, all for the bargain basement price of $169. Naturally, that video quality probably won’t be putting RED ONE out of a job, and you’ll need to supply your own SD card to make the magic happen, but if that doesn’t dissuade you, you can swipe one from a Radio Shack shelf in silver or black as of today.

Add this to your calendar: Sunday May 11th is Mother’s Day.

Now if you forget you can’t tell your mom it was our fault. Not again.

Since you’ve remembered, you might as well get her something nice.

Of course your mom would say it’s the thought that counts, but after you’ve gotten her lavender bath oil three years in a row, it’s getting harder for her to say that without grinding her teeth.

We’re looking out for your mama’s dental work, so here’s a list of gifts that will secure your position as her favorite child.

Do not under any circumstances share this list with your siblings.

Screen Grabs: Lost’s Ben shoots Nikon

April 27th, 2008 Digg it Digg this story

Ben (aka Benjamin Linus), leader of the Others and all around creepy manipulator, doesn’t just shoot guns all the time — as we find out in a flashforward to 2005, he also apparently shoots Nikon as well. Now, there’s certainly nothing wrong with a D100, but Ben does kind of strike us as the calculating, discerning type that would probably prefer a full-frame Canon though, you know?

Canon VIXIA HF11 model name turns up, imaginations run wild

April 24th, 2008 Digg it Digg this story

Believe it or not, HF11 actually wasn’t one of the many units Canon introduced at CES, but curiously enough, that moniker is showing up on the outfit’s own website. When taking a peek at the Drivers & Downloads section for the DC320 DVD camcorder, you’ll find a link for a PDF brochure of the VIXIA family that supposedly includes the HF11. Upon opening said file, however, you’ll discover nary a mention of the mysterious item. A new model waiting just around the bend? A simple typo? A devilish trick played by the suits at Canon? The world may never know.

[Thanks, Dan]

Ask Engadget: What’s the best digital camera for a child?

April 24th, 2008 Digg it Digg this story

Kids these days. Gifted with cellphones before they’re able to walk, texting before they can write and wrecking mum’s DSLR before they can even earn an allowance. In order to nix that last issue, many parents are looking to snag a point-and-shoot that wouldn’t be too overwhelming for the average kiddo, yet could stand the abuse and churn out somewhat respectable images. According to Sean:

“I have tried a couple of child-specific digital cameras on the market and have been unhappy with them. They are poorly made and take really crummy pictures. Does anyone have a recommendation for something that takes decent pictures (over 3-megapixels, please) and that you’d be comfortable turning over to a 10 year old?”

We’ll go ahead and assume Mr. Sean wants to keep the price point low, and while finding a kiddie camera with decent quality may be tough, feel free to include suggestions in comments for digicams you’ve had that have survived unspeakable catastrophes. Want to get your inquiry up in here next week? Shoot us a line at ask at engadget dawt com and we’ll see what we can do.
